Electrical Safety for Water and Wastewater Facilities

Water and wastewater facilities require complex systems to perform efficiently while also meeting the challenge of rising energy costs. Electrical network designers and operators in WWTPs must ensure high-quality and reliable power for all critical processes along the water treatment cycle. The risk of power interruptions may cause public health issues or environmental damage and can create astronomical contamination costs in a competitive and cost-constrained water market, which is why Bender has developed solutions suitable for practically any system grounding arrangement, including resistance grounded electrical systems within the facility.

Why is Bender equipment needed to monitor VFDs?

Modern systems often employ variable frequency drives (VFDs), also called adjustable speed drives (ASDs), that require special consideration to be adequately protected. These types of AC/DC loads are best protected by devices capable of monitoring all drive and load components across their entire operating frequency range to capture AC and DC ground faults. Bender RCM and NGRM products provide this advanced level of protection and can be included in turnkey HRG packages. Transformer-isolated medium-voltage ASDs, and their driven loads, are ungrounded. Bender insulation monitors, such as the iso685 series, should be used to detect ground faults on these critical and expensive systems. Their ability to detect very low fault currents allows pre-warning of ground faults before they cause significant damage to capital equipment.

Bender solutions continue to offer priceless value to the end user by providing state-of-the-art technology and project support to ensure critical facilities can operate efficiently with reliable ground fault protection.

Often, a combination of different grounding methods appears in the same system. Bender has both products and knowledge in all forms, as well as the ability to assist customers in getting more value out of their real-time trended information.

NGRM550 and NGRM750 neutral grounding resistor monitor

NGRM550/750

The NGRM550 and NGRM750 Neutral Grounding Resistor Monitor detects grounding-resistor failures and ground faults.

Benefits:

  • Preventative maintenance
  • Improve safety
  • Simplified display information
iso685 insulation monitoring device

iso685

The iso685 is the latest insulation monitor for ground-fault detection on ungrounded AC and DC systems, as well as systems with power conversion equipment such as variable frequency drives and inverters.

Benefits:

  • Minimize unplanned outages
  • Easily locate faults
  • Measure trending insulation deterioration
RCMS490 ground-fault monitoring device

RCMS490

The RCMS490 series provides ground-fault monitoring for up to twelve separate systems or channels in grounded and high-resistance grounded systems.

Benefits:

  • Safeguard equipment
  • Recognizes and locates ground faults
  • Monitors AC/DC frequencies

What are the benefits?

Continuity of Service
Control fault current and have alarm-only operation on the first ground fault.

Improved Safety
Reduces potential for shock and arc flash hazard. Arc flash is reduced by as much as 95%. Automatic fault location at feeders and loads can eliminate the need to open doors on energized equipment during troubleshooting.

Ease of Retrofit
Ability to easily and cost-effectively upgrade older equipment.

Reduces Maintenance Costs
Accuracy of detection leads to a decrease in maintenance costs and the need for human interaction with the system.
