Ground-Fault Monitoring for Grounded Systems
Ground-fault products are used to monitor grounded systems (resistance or solidly grounded) for fault currents or residual currents. The sum of all conductors except the protective earth conductor is measured by means of measuring current transformers.
In general, ground-fault monitors (aka residual current monitors RCM or RCMS) are used to send a warning or alarm to user or operators typically while the currents still remain very low. Many of the RCM devices feature dual setpoints for enhanced features. Ground-fault monitors detect leakage current at low level usually caused by deteriorations of the insulation at an early stage. A key criterion for selection is whether full frequency response is required or simple 60 Hz responding devices.
