Differenzstrom-Überwachungsgeräte (auch Differenzstromwächter) werden zur Überwachung von geerdeten Netzen (TN- und TT-Systeme) auf Fehlerströme oder Differenzströme eingesetzt. Gemessen wird die Summe der Ströme aller Leiter außer dem Schutzleiter mit Hilfe von Messstromwandlern.
In der Regel werden Differenzstrom-Überwachungsgeräte (Abkürzung RCM, Residual Current Monitor) dazu verwendet, noch vor dem Erreichen der Abschaltschwelle eines RCD dem Anwender eine Meldung zu geben. Differenzstrom-Überwachungsgeräte erkennen Verschlechterungen des Isolationsniveaus frühzeitig und sicher.
